How much will my copy cost?
I don’t know.

No coyness intended—but I can’t price your project without knowing what it is.

“Can’t you just tell me what you charge for a page of web content—or a brochure?” you ask, reasonably.

Um, no. You see, I’ve priced brochures from…

  • $600 for a simple Slim Jim to…
  • $10,000 for a complicated 20-page booklet that required fast turnaround.

Here are some factors that influence pricing:

  • Your homework: Can you provide existing collateral? A lot? Some? Will you supply all the research and background materials I need—for your product, service, customers, competitors? Or—be truthful—will I need to gather this information myself and interview your people? Is your project part of a larger marketing/communications strategy? Can you tell me where it fits into your sales cycle or business plan? Do you have customer/consumer research, demographic information, focus group data? To get an idea of the information I need to start your project, see my consult questionnaire.

  • My time: Will I draft your project from scratch—takes more time—or edit and restructure existing material—less time? Do you need copy from me—or do you also need marketing strategy, branding and project management as well? Can we handle communications by phone and email—or do you need me to show up for meetings and creative briefings? How many corporate cooks stir your stew—do you okay copy, or will it need approval from multiple departments and legal? Do you need immediate turnaround or do you have flexibility?

Are you more/less expensive than other copywriters?
My fees are right in the middle. Considering my added-value—I strategize, brand, manage projects independently and produce great copy—my rates are a bargain. That said, my fees are higher than those of inexperienced copywriters or off-shore scriveners. If you need formulaic filler copy, I’m not your gal. I craft targeted, action-driving copy aimed to convert customers. It costs more than cookie-cutter, outsourced copy—but it returns far more on your marketing investment.

Are your fees negotiable?
Yes. Because I’ve managed a not-for-profit organization—and run my own small business—I understand the needs and imperatives of other small business owners and non-profit marketers. Tell me your budget and I’ll work with you to prioritize marketing/communications needs, deliver great copy at a price you can afford—and help you develop a marcom strategy that builds business as you move forward.

How fast can you turn around my project?
Usually two weeks minimum. More if I’m on deadline or your project is complex. Rush jobs that require evening or weekend work can generally be accommodated for a reasonable rush fee.

My business is in Idaho/Bahrain/China. How can I work with a copywriter from New York?
Pretty well, actually. I’ve worked virtually—and successfully—with clients from New York City to Saudi Arabia. Truth is, 95% of my work is manageable by fax, phone, email and Internet—including phone interviews with experts and executives as well as online project-sharing. Still not sure long-distance partnership will work? Call me at 001.914.299.2569 and let’s talk.

My industry isn’t represented in your portfolio. Can you really write copy that sells my product?
Probably. My portfolio represents a tiny sampling of my work. I’ve written copy in most media—and for industries ranging from the auto parts aftermarket (for an information product) to zucchini (for a cookbook).

Please take a look at my portfolio and a list of diverse markets for which I’ve written—or contact me now to discuss your project.

P.S. If I can’t manage your project, I promise to tell you. And I can usually recommend a writer who can.
